Kargil Vijay Diwas: Why It’s Significant For Indians?

26th of July, is the day which commemorates the decisive victory of Indian armed forces over intruding enemy forces of Pakistan against our country’s border. The Day is observed to pay tribute to all the 559 soldiers who laid down their lives for the sake of our country and is called the Kargil Vijay Diwas.

History & Significance of Kargil Vijay Diwas

In 2023 we are celebrating the 24th Kargil Vijay Diwas. The Kargil war took place in 1999 between May and July, when Pakistani armed forces taking advantage of harsh weather conditions crossed the Line of Control (LOC) and got into our country’s border through the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir. That is when “Operation Vijay” was launched by Indian armed forces, which included soldiers of Army, Navy and Air Force. Over 200,000 soldiers were launched by Indian armed forces to safeguard our country.

The war was concluded on 26th Of July and was declared a success after Indian soldiers recaptured the strategic peaks of Tololing, Tiger Hill, and Point 4875, and Pakistani forces retreated from their occupied positions.

Kargil war Heroes

Over the past years Indians paid homage to the brave martyrs and soldiers who fought the Kargil War in different ways. Many movies such as LOC: Kargil(2003) and Lakshya(2004) were also made showing the bravery of the Indian Army. Recently released Shershaah(2021) was based on the life of Capt. Vikram Batra who was one of the most important roles in the Kargil War.

During the Kargil war many Bravehearters sacrificed their lives, and to honor their bravery Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid Homage at Amar Jawan Jyoti to the Martys at the India Gate on 26 July.

The Defence Minister of India Mr. Rajnath Singh said, “I salute those brave sons of India, who sacrificed everything for the protection of the motherland, India. I salute those brave sons who put the country first and did not hesitate to sacrifice their lives for it.”
