Janhvi Kapoor’s ‘Ulajh’ Dominates on Netflix

In 2024, many Bollywood films failed at the box office, including big releases like Akshay Kumar’s Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Ajay Devgn’s Auron Mein Kaha Dum Tha. However, a surprising trend has emerged where some of these films are gaining popularity on OTT platforms. One such film is Ulajh.

Ulajh, a drama-thriller, was released in theaters in August 2024 but didn’t perform well. Despite the negative reviews from critics, the film has found new life on streaming services, especially on Netflix. It quickly became one of the top trending films in India, currently sitting at number two in the trending list, much to everyone’s surprise.

Ulajh: Storyline, Cast & Budget

The movie stars Janhvi Kapoor as Suhana Bhatia, a young and talented diplomat who becomes India’s Deputy High Commissioner in London. Suhana comes from a family of diplomats, with both her father and grandfather serving in the same profession. Although she has an impressive career, her personal life takes a troubling turn when she meets Nakul, played by Gulshan Devaiah.

At first, Nakul appears to be a love interest, but his true intentions are revealed as the story progresses. He begins blackmailing Suhana, leading to the film’s intense drama and conflict. This plot twist has resonated with audiences on OTT platforms, making the movie much more popular online than it was in theaters.

In addition to Janhvi Kapoor and Gulshan Devaiah, the film has a strong cast that includes Roshan Mathew, Rajesh Tailang, and Adil Hussain. The movie was directed by Sudhanshu Saria and co-written by Parvez Sheikh, Atika Chohan, and Saria. Despite its interesting storyline, Ulajh struggled at the box office.

With a budget of ₹35 crores, the movie could only earn ₹11.05 crores in theaters, making it a financial failure. However, it has gained a rating of 6.9/10 on IMDb, and its success on OTT shows that audiences are enjoying it in the comfort of their homes.
