Why Ex-Pakistan PM Imran Khan Jailed For 10 Years?

A Pakistan court sentenced former PM Imran Khan and former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi to 10 years in prison.

They are accused of leaking a diplomatic cable, known as the "cipher," during a public rally on March 27, 2022.

The verdict, delivered nine days before the February 8 general election.

Khan and PTI claimed the cipher contained a supposed threat from the US to oust him as prime minister, adding a geopolitical dimension to the case.

Imran Khan, already ousted in a 2022 no-confidence vote, cannot contest the election as he serves a three-year jail term.

The cipher is believed to be diplomatic correspondence between the Pakistani ambassador to Washington and the foreign ministry in Islamabad.

In addition to the "cipher case," Khan faces over 150 other pending legal cases, indicating a complex legal situation.
